Our chosen artist is James Blunt, as you can see from what he is wearing in this photo he wears quite casual clothes. His generic piece of clothing is his leather jacket. He tends to have a simplistic and casual costume in his music videos.
He generally wears a t-shirt , along with trousers/jeans and casual footwear such as trainers. In his music video for Goodbye my lover wears a plain white t shirt and some jeans. His colour scheme appears to be quite light, this usually connotes vulnerability which then suits with the theme of the songs as they are about love or breakup.
I believe that we should follow this type of style for our artist as this costume fits in with the soft rock genre. We will mainly shoot the artist outside in different coats but we will include some shots with him in a simple t-shirt.
Male actor
As we are wanting to show the days go by within our music video we will need a wide variety of costumes for the actors. The story behind the male actor is that he dies so when we do the fade shots in the chorus we will dress the male actor in a white t-shirt. Not only because the colour white has references to heaven, it also links in with the generic clothing that the artist wears. This then connects the two people as one to then show that the song links to the storyline of the video footage. However we cannot keep the man in the same tops every day otherwise you will not be able to tell that time is moving forward. So, we will still dress him in fairly plain clothes keeping the light shades of colour.
Female actor
Again we will need more than one outfit for this female actor. We will be dressing the female in fairly baggy, dark coloured clothing to create sadness and a sense of death. in some frames where the woman is on her own she will maybe wear an item of clothing that was the mans. The baggy clothes style is generically used in most breakup scenes as they generally make the actor look sad. Within the scenes where the woman is with the man she will be wearing fairly presentable clothing with a fair amount of jewellery on show and bright colours, however when she is in shot without the man she will be dressed in dark clothing to show how lonely and sad she is.
Our overall costume choice is that we would like to keep it casual clothing however keeping a mature theme which our target audience can relate to as they may wear similar clothes. The costumes characters wear and the narrative of the music video are the two main ways the audience feel they can interact with the song therefore it is very important to get it right.
By planning our costumes in this much detail, it allows for better planning of our project and therefore creation of a clearer narrative for the audience to watch to promote the song (the main purpose of a music video).
We have also researched into the costumes because we want to be prepared in advance. we do not want to be rushing round on the day looking for the right clothing for the characters to wear. This will be more time efficient and therefore we will be able to spend more time perfecting the set so that it looks professional and audiences can identify the genre.
