Audience theories

  • Cultural Effects Model

  • The effects theory is a rather outdated model of audience consumption. It places the power with the text and the institution that created the text. The audience is seen as a single mass that passively receive the messages of the text. It implies that the powerful media ‘inject’ messages into an unquestioning audience. Although, this is considered to be an oversimplified model, it is certainly true that the media can have an enormous effect on people, people can be ‘addicted’ to computer games and certain uses of the internet, governments use media propaganda to further their aims, and advertising is known to be so powerful that certain products, e.g. cigarettes, cannot be advertised on television. Effects Model (Hypodermic needle model)
Uses And Gratifications

  • Emphasises what consumes of media products do with them, the power is considered to lie with the individual consumer of the media who is seen to use certain tests to gratify certain needs and interests. Theorists Blumler and Katz postulated that there were five main reasons why audiences consumed media texts:
  • - To be informed or educated.
  • - In order to identify with characters and situations.
  • - To be entertained.
  • - To enable themselves to socially interact with others (watching, listening or reading together or through discussion of what they’d consumed)
  • - To escape from their daily troubles or woes

  • Andrew Goodwins Theory
  • Music videos more often than not tend to include a demonstration of typical genre characteristics For example: a video of a stage performance is typical for a metal video, a dance routine typical for a boy/girl band and bikini clad women by a pool and flashy sports cars in a rap video Music videos can also link to film genres, this is know as intertextuality. e.g. Many heavy rock songs are influenced by horror films

  • There are frequent references to the notion of looking and the voyeuristic treatment of the female body. The notion of looking includes men or women being portrayed seductively or if there is eye contact with the camera. The notion of looking can also be referenced by the use of props. e.g. Mirrors, television screens, cameras, telescopes, binoculars and magnifying glasses are all references to, these are commonly used. Voyeurism is widely used to sell the artist‟s music through sex appeal, a recent example being Miley Cyrus. Voyeurism today is only shown at one angle. You do not see a male doing that, only women.

  • There is a succinct relationship between music and visuals. e.g. either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting this can be seen in killer/papa was a rolling by George Michael

  • The record label which the artist is assigned to tends to have certain demands. They often include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist will have a visual style which recurs across their work. e.g. An example of a visual style could be Lady Gaga as she is always wearing quirky clothes The “4th wall” is broken near always when the video is a performance. This is direct address and seem like they are singing to us.

  • There is often intertextual references (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc.) Audiences enjoy knowing the „in joke‟. e.g. Destiny‟s Child doing Independent Women referencing Charlie‟s Angels Will Smith doing Men in Black for the film Men in Black Intertextuality in The Wombats video for My Circuitboard City referencing a video game.
The Audience Theory That We Will Use

  • When creating our music video we will be basing it all around Andrew Goodwins audience theory. We will be doing this by making sure that we follow all of the conventions that are mention within the theory. For example we will show both artists performance shots and different narrative shots of the man and the woman together and then the woman on her own.  we will have many images of the female on her own making her look vulnerable and dependant. There will be a notion of looking with the artist performance shots. I will incorporate a link to music and visuals for example at the time the song says
  • "i kissed your lips" i will have footage of the girl kissing the man.

Ideas For Magazine Advertisement

For our project, we have each compiled ideas for a magazine advert draft for our album. This has linked to our individual designs, and we have each developed a rough design for what we had in mind.

For our project we have been asked to make an magazine advertisement for our specific artist. To overcome the decision of deciding on a design we all made our own rough design and at the end we would decide on our favourite and develop it further with all opinions and ideas put forward.

George's Idea

Above is my first idea for my magazine advertisement, this style is in the same style of the digipak we have chosen to use with the same image of the hand and the blue sky. To keep the same style but change the image a bit I have added a smudge grass effect on the sky photo to look like this. I have kept the sky image because form what I have analysed the best advertisements for albums are the ones that relate the most to the content of the album. So the name of the song is called "goodbye my lover and the meaning behind this is that some one has dies. So I have added in the two hands holding on having a reference to heaven and not wanting to let go. Instead of having a the normal skin colour on the hands I have taken that off and added an overlay of an image of the sky. This again gives a heavenly reference. Like the generic music advertisements I have added the production companies, a website for the artist and a twitter icon. the font that I used was called Xpress Heavy S. I used this text style as I thought it looks soft and that would then tie in with the happy, light feeling of the song. This certain text style that I have chosen is a lot bolder than other text styles which means that it is a good idea to then use it for my main headings. Having a bolder text will ensure that the audience will read that first as it will stand out more.

Josh's Idea
Here is my idea for magazine advertisement. I have decided to keep a very basic theme to my advertisement as the song in question deals with very emotional and natural themes. As well as this, the advertisement does give basic information, for example the artist name, name of the song, release date and production information. However, it also leaves a lot of room for creation of a star - meaning there is lots of room to market the artist's face - which I have done by using an image from our music video (part of Goodwin's theory)

Lewis' Idea

Alastair's Idea
Here is a magazine advertisement I have made to promote James Blunts song 'Goodbye My Lover'. I've decided to keep a very dark mysterious design to the advert because I feel this specific song is quite depressing filled with emotion. The dark silhouette connotes this mystery, the title of the song 'Goodbye my lover' makes the audience wonder who the 'lover' is and this is where I feel the mystery comes from. The advert i feel should be promoting James Blunts name the most therefore I have put his name in a large font right at the top of the advert so its unnoticeable. I've decided to put our logo in the bottom left of the advert this acts as promotion to our personal record label, it will trigger interest within our target audience.

Editing Schedule

It is important that we have an editing schedule so that we can keep track of time in order to complete our music video by the deadline. Last year we struggled to keep track of time when we came to editing so we have learnt from this and have created a schedule just for the editing in order for our video to look professional. Therefore this time we have organised a professional schedule so we can keep on track and edit effectively with plenty of time to do so. This is beneficial through our planning stages as it keeps us on course to completing our task.

We plan to finish all our filming by the 28th of October meaning that we will start up the editing process promptly after. We will aim to edit our footage four times a week over the course of three weeks. This then allows us to go back and film again if we need too. For example if we miss certain shots or some of the lip synching is it of time then it allows us to go back and correct our mistakes.

The days we will be editing will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday giving us a mid week break and we will spend at least 45 minutes a time completing our editing. If we stick to our schedule it is going to mean that we are going to have lots of time to complete the editing and if we encounter any problems it will mean we have time to fix them.
