Emailing the Record Company -

In order to use James Blunt's song in our final product of our music video, we had to gain permission from the record label. For this, we emailed Atlantic Records:

Unfortunately, Atlantic never replied to our email, however, the screenshot above is evidence of us attempting to gain permission to use their song. Despite this, we are going to go ahead and use this song, Goodbye My Lover by James Blunt, nevertheless.

Music Video Brief

Music video brief

For our music video, we have decided to use the song “Goodbye My Lover” by the artist James Blunt. He is a popular artist and was in his prime about 10 years ago when he released his album receiving three awards. Since then he has released a few singles but has not been releasing as many songs.

We chose this artist because his style of genre is pop rock and his songs are generally of a slow tempo. By doing this it means that when we use techniques such as lip synching, we can perform it as professionally as possible so it looks good and realistic. However, if we were to pick a rap song with a high tempo of lyrics it would mean the performer in our video would not be able to keep up. This song also gives us a narrative to work with, it gives us a picture in our head of what we think it is going to look like which goes into juxtaposition with a Calvin Harris song for example where the video could go anywhere and doesn’t have a particular clear narrative.

Auditioning

Audition for male actor number one
Rhys Willett- The first question we asked Rhys was whether he has previously had any experience in acting before and his answer was no. This stood out to us straight away because as we are trying to conduct a serious, professional music video, we need to have actors who have experience in order for it to look good.
We then asked Rhys to do a series of facial expressions showing emotions. We asked him to do this because our song is an emotional song and facial expressions are vital in order for the audience to understand the feelings of the song. Rhys was good with some of the expressions he done however he lacked understanding some of the emotions we asked him to do. Our last question for Rhys was "How do these lyrics make you feel?". We asked this because we want an actor who understands the song as well as we do in order for them to give the best performance possible. Rhys seemed to struggle finding an answer to this question before replying with "quite sad". This answer was to brief for our liking as we want him to understand how to feel within the music video.

Audition for male actor number two

Aron Hugh - Like Rhys we asked Aron whether he had any experience in acting before and his answer was yes but only for a small section of a low budget music video. This is a feature that we would like in our actor as we want our final piece to look as professional as possible. We then asked Aron to do a series of facial expressions, we have asked him this because our music video is a very emotional video. We found that Aron was not very versatile in his facial expression as he was unable to pull a sad face. Our last question for Aron was "How do these lyrics make you feel?". We asked this because we want an actor who understands the song as well as we do in order for them to give the best performance possible. Aron gave us a good positive answer, saying that he thought the lyrics were about a break up. However he didn't give much detail as to why.

Audition for male number three
Bradley Welch - We asked Brad whether he had any experience in acting before and he said that he had done some small time acting for past students so it is perfect standard for us. We then asked brad to give us a series of facial expressions and he managed to nail all of them without being distracted. This will be useful for us when filming as we will be able to get more shots done in a faster, efficient way. Our last question for Brad was "How do these lyrics make you feel?". We asked this because we want an actor who understands the song as well as we do in order for them to give the best performance possible. Brad gave us the perfect answer that we were looking for and nearly described our storyline, word for word. This is useful so the actor then knows the storyline of the film and can then use his skills to make our video look professional.

Audition for female number one

Viki Cockrell- we asked Viki if she has any previous experience in acting before and her answer was no. This stood out again to us just like the others because we want to make sure we have professional experienced actors in our music video.
We then asked Viki to carry out a series of facial expressions which unfortunately went awfully for her because she didn't seem to understand which certain expressions meant. By this point we already knew that we would not be hiring Viki.
Viki then made certain that we would not be hiring her when she said to us "I better be getting double the pay of the other actors". As a group we found this very rude and we would not want to/be able to work with her.

Audition for female number two

Karina Fox- we asked Karina the first question which we asked the others about her previous experience. Karina gave us a strong response which concluded that she had performed three times in the Civic Theatre as part of a play. However, before we asked this question she turned up 20 minutes late to the audition which showed that she is not very punctual. when we asked why she was late, her answer was that she "forgot". This showed us straight away that she did not care much for this role and put us off hiring her.
The second part of the interview was the facial expressions which she nailed followed by the third part which gave a strong answer. Karina was a strong contender for the part however because she was late and the reason for which she gave, we decided as a group we could not hire her because we want the actress to care as much for the part as we do for the music video. They need to have the same goals as us and want to succeed.

Audition for female number three
Olivia Pridmore - Before interviewing Olivia we were notified that she has taken drama throughout GCSE and A level. From that we could tell that she would be perfect for our role as she would be able to act regardless of how much experience she has. Unlike Karina she arrived at the interview 5 minutes early and unlike Victoria she didn't mention anything about being paid and understood that we have to do it as part of our media production. Like Brad in the second and last questions, she did brilliantly and managed to give us the perfect answer we were looking for. From analysing all of our candidates fully, weighing out their strengths and weaknesses Olivia came in top because we didn't like the attitude of Victoria or the punctuality of Karina.

Audition number one -
The first audition was from Ryan Chapman aged 17
Initial thoughts - Ryan was a very enthusiastic character who spent time learning the lyrics for the song so that he then knew how to pronounce them and when they were coming up. This is a feature that we are looking for in our actor so that when it comes to filming we will be able to just get all the shots we need, done quickly instead of messing around with trying to know the lyrics. the negatives to this individual is that he didn't really look like an artist and at times didn't put all of the enthusiasm into all of the lyrics. Also off the camera the individual lacked the ability to communicate with us when trying to give him constructive criticism.

Audition number two
The second audition was from Jack Jolly aged 18
Initial thoughts - Unlike Ryan Jack was very laid back and already knew the lyrics to the song so ended up not rehearsing before and wanting to jump straight in. This is clear from the footage we have got and most of the time he was out of sync with the music (this was not down to the editing). Having someone that is not in time with the music will make it harder for we come to editing and we have to match the music to the visuals of the artist. From the over confidence within the song this actor struggled to stand out from the others.

Audition number 3
The third audition was Tom Strangwige aged 18
Initial thoughts - Like Ryan tom rehearsed all of his lyrics for the segment of the song we had chosen so when we then went to film he was ready and precisely on time, with only a few minor exceptions which could then be covered up by shooting the same shot three different times and using the best one. This candidate also has the perfect style that we have been looking for in our auditions. From this in conclusion if the artist is available for the dates we are filming we will be asking number three to be our James Blunt.

Initial Ideas For Music Video

From watching past media students videos we liked the idea of a very specific music video which was one that was created for "Mac Miller - Frick park market". We liked the way in which this was edited and the way that the types of footage that was generated wouldn't be too hard to find. After discussing we realised that we would be restricting our self a bit and may try to base it too much on this previous student. This along with other things meant that we could not do a music video like this.

Our next idea was to do a slower song with a bit more of a narrative so that we can then base the footage on that story. We decided that all of the slower types of music videos we could relate to more as the footage relates to the visuals. After looking at various artists such as James Bay and Ed Sheeran we decided on James Blunt to be our artist.

After we had chosen the song "Goodbye my lover" we wanted to make the storyline about a man saying goodbye to his woman. We then had the idea that the man will be almost talking after he died to the woman. We wanted to portray this with a few fade shots of him with the woman when he's alive and then when he's gone. We will then have the artist as a different character and then the male and female characters.

It is important to gather initial ideas before making a professional music video of a high standard. Our main target is to create a clear narrative which hooks the target audience therefore promoting the song. This will also help the promotion of the artist which is one of the main purposes of a music video.

Music Video Conventions

Generic Conventions found in music videos

Within music, there are several different genres of music and within these genres there are generic conventions upheld.
Throughout the genres, the conventions differ immensely.

Rock
The Rock genre stereotypically uses a heavy amount of close ups on singers, guitar shots, crowd shots and all things that present the band doing a live performances.
As well as this, there are often lots of shots playing their song in curious places, for example on a skyscraper rooftop, on the roof of a moving vehicle or on the top of a mountain.

Pop
The pop music genre often centres itself around a star image. This means that the video will usually use high amounts of close ups a mid-shots of the star of the video, making them the main theme of the music video. Furthermore, there is usually a mixture of some sort of narrative, and lip-syncing performance-style shots of the artists - often with some sort of dance routine etc.

Hip-hop / Rap
The Hip-hop or rap genres also uses the idea of a star idol as their main theme, however it is  usually set in more of a street-style setting, rather than a studio or performance style that a pop video might be. The videos usually involve some major iconography in the video, for example 'Brooklyn bridge' or the 'Eiffel tower' to show some sort of setting and location. Some generic icons seen in hip-hop and rap videos would be the use of cars, chains, money, the colour gold and a sexual view of women.

Indie
An indie music video is usually created using a low budget, and is therefore shot in public places such as parks, streets and fields / forests. This means that is quite normal to see extras in the back of shots of indie videos. As well as this, the videos use a combination of a strong-emotional narrative, and performance shots - often of just the singer on his own or with the band- to break up the story. The videos also often show a frequent use of abstract shots, therefore use a combination of less-frequently use shots such as the 'canted angle' shot or an extreme close up on a performers mouth etc.

'Drum n Bass'
The drum and bass music genre uses high-paced and quick moving music, this means that there are often lots of fast cuts between shots to present this. As well as this, artists in this genre are often never seen in the music video (completely opposite of other music genres - they avoid advertising the face of the star) this means that the music videos are often almost entirely narrative based or a crowd at a live performance. Despite this, in this genre there is lots of freedom for featuring artists, which means a generic theme of drum and bass music videos is the role of other artists. This is most notably shown in the music video 'end credits' by Chase and Status Feat. Plan B.

Music Video Target Audience Questionnaire Analysis

Above this text here shows the results that we have taken from our questionnaires. From this results we have decided on that our storyline must cover something to do with a break up. This means that we can stick with our original idea where it is about a man passing away and the woman not wanting him to leave.

The main thing that has come up within these questionnaires is love. All of the questionnaires that we have taken out have information on them that somehow relate to love and a couple breaking up together. This is good as this is the same sort of idea we had within our group. This then means that our ideas are related to our target audience of this type of music video.

Music Video Target Audience Questionnaire

We will be giving this questionnaire to our target audience asking them various questions about our music video we wish to create. These results will help us understand what our target audience want from our media text and a few additional features we should add to relate it to our genre. (Our target audience has been listed on a previous blog post).

Our music video is for “James Blunt – Goodbye my lover”

Comparison of Music Video Findings

There are certain key conventions that can be found in certain types of genre in music videos. This includes certain themes, setting or certain props that may be incorporated within. They may also be seen in the artist themselves with the certain types of costumes they wear throughout all of their music videos.

For example an artist like Jay Z in the genre hiphop rap uses the genric convention of the black and white clip filter used in both of these music videos, 99 problems and empire state of mind.

Boy band videos such as one direction and the wanted are more likely to be light-hearted when it comes to Pop music. They usually sing about a girl which is of interest to them. all artists demand a lot of camera time however it seems to be the genre pop that want the most. So for example in a one direction video they will have a very small amount of narative shots.

When creating our music video it is highly important to associate our video with the particular genre we have chosen which will make it a lot more presentable to the target audience and make it seem more believable. Our chosen artist is James Blunt, in the majority of his videos James has a lot of scenic shots when talking about love stories.

They are usually split up 60/40 with the narrative and the artist singing.  In songs such as "Goodbye my lover" James plays the artist and then has another male actor to play the man in the relationship he is singing about. We would like to follow these key conventions our artist has been using over the years, to make it a lot more relatable with audience.
